The Old KandP (South)

Calabogie on the Old K&P (South) Map
Distance:2/15 km
Trail TypeHard-Packed Dirt, Former Rail Bed

Difficulty:Easy

The abandoned Kingston to Pembroke (K & P) Railway is a popular recreation trail. This tour travels down to Calabogie along the K & P and returns by some of the small back roads that are abundant in the area. There are some hills on the way back from Calabogie along the roads, so you have the option of returning along the K & P. This is a great day trip and you can easily include lunch and a swim at Calabogie.

Information:

The K&P Trail - South can be viewed as 2 trails in one. From the trailhead a short 2 km trail runs north ending on the causeway between Calabogie Lake and Grassy Bay. The longer 15 km section of the multi-purpose trail built on the rail bed of the abandoned K&P railroad from the 1800’s runs south from the trailhead to Flower Station. Both trails are flat making them easy to hike and visually interesting as they pass through the forest and along beside lakes and wetlands. Hikers can vary the distance traveled before retracing their route to the trailhead.

How to Get There:

Halfway between Renfrew and Arnprior on Hwy 17, take Cty Rd 508 (Calabogie Rd) 26 km to Calabogie. Turn left onto 511 at Stinson gas station just as you reach Calabogie. Veering left through the village staying on Cty Rd 511 for 4 km. Turn right on Barryvale Rd. and follow it 4 km until it ends at the K&P Trail – South trailhead across from Calabogie Highlands Golf Club.

Further Information:

After parking at the intersection, hikers can then chose from the shorter 2 km trail to the north or the longer 15 km. trail to the south.
The shorter trail north, keeping Calabogie Lake to your left, takes you past cottages and then onto the causeway separating Calabogie Lake from Grassy Bay. From the causeway lovely views of Calabogie Lake, Calabogie Peaks and Grassy Bay can be seen.

The longer trail to the south passes along Calabogie Lake to your right and through rock cuts and forest until it reaches Mile Lake after 6 km. Hikers looking for more of a challenge will find the next 9 km. from Mile Lake to Flower Station passing by a number of scenic lakes and wetlands.
