Pembroke: Well-known Canadian comedian Rick Mercer attended the Giant Pumpkin Weigh-Off on Saturday, September 26^th and participated in the Giant Pumpkin Boat Races on Sunday, September 27^th at Hugli’s Blueberry Ranch. During the two days, Rick Mercer’s crew shot footage for his tv show, The Rick Mercer Report. The program should air in 2 – 3 weeks. Coverage also included other agri-tourism activities that Hugli’s offers during the fall – pumpkin cannon shows, pig races, pumpkin patch & wagon rides, 6 acre corn maze and more. 

 

Rick Mercer from the Rick Mercer Report is a Canadian television comedy series which airs on CBC Television and The Comedy Network. Launched in 2004 and hosted by comedian Rick Mercer, the weekly half-hour show combines news parody, sketch comedy, visits to interesting places across Canada, and satirical editorials, often involving Canadian politics. 

 

On Saturday, September 26^th at the GPC Sanctioned Giant Pumpkin Weigh-Off for Eastern Ontario and Quebec, pumpkins weighing over 1100 pounds competed for huge prizes. There was big excitement as a new world record for the longest gourd was set by Shawville native, Todd Kline. His gourd measured in at 128.56 inches.    (See competition results below)

 

On Sunday, September 27^th, the 4th Annual Giant Pumpkin Boat Races also took place at Hugli’s Blueberry Ranch. Giant pumpkins weighing over 600 pounds were carved into boats and paddled across a pond. World champion paddler took 1^st place, 2^nd place went to Rick Mercer and Olympian paddler Sarah Boudens and 3^rd place went to Renfrew County MPP Cheryl Gallant. It was a very entertaining race.

 

 

The Giant Pumpkin Events were a part of Hugli’s Blueberry Ranch’s Fall Family Fun Season that runs from September 19th to November 1st on weekends from 10am – 5pm. Activities include the 6 acre corn maze, pig races,  pumpkin cannon show, 100 foot hill slide, pirate ship maze, hay and pumpkin mazes, country puppet show, wagon ride to the pumpkin patch to find the perfect pumpkin, giant sandbox and visiting the friendly animal
