Lyric Landscapes of CanadaThe Ottawa Valley Music Festival Chorus rehearses for its last concert of the 2009 season, Lyric Lanscapes of Canada. After a summer of Haydn, Gospel and Rock n' Roll, the Ottawa Valley Music Festival closes out its 16th season in Almonte with a celebration of the music and landscape of Canada, with more Cancon than you can shake a hockey stick at.
Lyric Landscapes of Canada (Sunday, September 20th, Almonte Old Town Hall) will encompass music inspired by Group of Seven paintings and folk melodies from upper and lower Canada - all by Canadian composers. The programme will include Six Bergerettes of Lower Canada by Sir Ernest MacMillan, The Rose Trilogy and Lake Isle of Innsfree by Eleanor Daley, All Around the Circle by John Greer, and A Gallery of Song: Spirit of the Land by Ottawa composer James Wright.
Sure to be the highlight of the concert, A Gallery of Song:Spirit of the Land is a rare blend of visual art, poetry and music that celebrates both the creative spirit and the great beauty of our land.
The piece was first performed by the Kanata Children's Chorus using lyrics inspired by Group of Seven paintings by A.Y. Jackson, Tom Thomson, Emily Carr, A.J. Casson, F.H. Varley, J.E.H. MacDonald and Franklin Carmichael. The piece evolved from a desire to introduce young people to the rich tapestry of images inspired by the Canadian landscape. Nine choral vignettes by James Wright were commissioned, each piece based on poems written by children ages 9 to 16.
The concert gets underway at 3:00 at the Almonte Old Town Hall, Sunday, September 20th. Tickets are $20 for adults, $10 for students and free for children 12 and under.
