Calabogie Peaks Welcomes ParaAlpine Athletes of the 2010 Ontario ParaSport Winter Games January 22 -24th, 2010January 22nd 2010 until January 24th 2010Calabogie, ON: Calabogie Peaks is proud to be the Alpine host site for the 2010 Ontario ParaSport Winter Games(OPWG) from January 22 - 24. OPWG is the largest multi-sport event in the province for athletes with a physical disability. ParaAlpine Skiing athletes combine speed and agility while racing down slopes at high speed. There are two Alpine events on the ParaSport Winter Games Program: Giant Slalom and Slalom. The Giant Slalom event begins on Saturday, January 23rd at 9 AM, and the Slalom racing will start at 9:30 am on Sunday, January 24th. Friday, January 22nd is a training day for all athletes. Competition accommodates male and female athletes with a physical disability such as spinal injury, cerebral palsy, amputation, other conditions and blindness/visual impairment. Athletes compete in three categories based on their functional ability, and a results calculation system allows athletes with different disabilities to compete against each other. Skiers with blindness/visual impairment are guided through the course by sighted guides using voice signals to indicate the course to follow.
Athletes with physical disabilities use equipment that is adapted to their needs including single ski, sit-ski or orthopedic aids. For more information visit www.odart.org.
Kingston, Ontario, is the host city for OPWG, with over 450 athletes participating in seven competitive sports including ParaAlpine Skiing, ParaNordic Skiing, Sledge Hockey, wheelchair Curling, Wheelchair Basketball, Wheelchair Rugby and Swimming.
The 2010 Ontario ParaSport Winter Games are provided with grant funding from the Ministry of Health Promotion.
